The idea to design an awakening device for the sleeper compartments of the OSE train company, emerged from the insecurity that the passengers feel, about the affective awakening, when their destination place arrives. 

 

Today, for the passenger's awakening, there is full dependence from the human factor - an employee who awakes all the passengers in every station - something that is annoying and not always affective. The current situation is also annoying for the employee who burdens further responsibilities.

 

We gave emphasis in the ability of the device to be adjusted in the needs of every passenger, and so we reached in the design of an individual device. When a passenger enters the compartment, the device is light and therefore obvious. The passenger chooses his destination, and after that the device remains dark and the passenger sleeps. When his destination arrives, the device becomes light again, and the part of the device below the pillow begins to vibrate. Then the passenger inactivates the device by pulling the cord down.

 

With the vibration and the light, the awakening of the passenger is affective without bothering the other passenger of the compartment.

 

The interface and the use of the device, reaching out to a wide target group, of all ages, and without a given good knowledge of technology, should be clear and understandable. Thus, the touch screens were avoided, and we chose buttons with clear indications.

 

It is intended for public use and so it is not removable and it doesn't come in contact with the body of the user (unless fingers), since the vibrating part will be positioned below the bedsheet, to the point which is placed the pillow.

 

For safety, the cable is attached to the wall and the vibrating part of the device hangs with a velcro on the mattress, in order to remain stable.
